What Is Okra ?
A "No Care" Easy To Grow Plant That Produces All Season
Okra is a bright and decorative addition to any asparagus garden. Okra is a member of the
mallow family and related to hibiscus and hollyhock. Okra flowers look like the blooms of a
hibiscus. It has large pale yellow flowers, that attract pollinators.
Okra is a hibiscus that provides a garden with gorgeous flowers and well as a very testy
vegetable. Okra when planted plant in organic well drained soil grows faster and reaches
full size and ready to harvest in no time. The plants stand erect and have a main trunk,
making them look a little tree-like in the garden The plant produces big broad leaves. The
broad leaves provide nice shade to the soil below, so mulch is not usually needed.
Although, I still do mulch around the okra plants, just not as thickly as other garden plants.
Okra will grow 3 - 5 feet tall. First it will make stems and leaves followed by yellow blossoms
followed by light yellow and dark burgundy colored flowers. The pods follow after the

Okra plants grow very tall by the end of summer.
By the end of the season, full-sized okra plants will tower overhead as these do at the edge
of a tree and shrub border.
Okra is more popular as a Southern specialty crop; however it will grow perfectly well even in
Northern gardens. If you can raise tomatoes and peppers in your garden you should have no
trouble growing a healthy and
productive crop of Okra. Find a location in your garden or plant in containers. A nice sunny
hot spot full sun if possible.
If your soil is not rich in organic matter, you can work bagged organic compost or slow-release
conventional fertilizer such as 4-6-6 or 19-19-19 into the soil.
The soil should also drain well and have a pH between 6.5 and 7.0
Set your Okra plants out when the nights are at least 60 degrees at night and 75 during the day.
Those planting Okra in the North should wait till June or keep them indoors till the temperature
outside is right.

Okra plants have fragile tap roots take care not to break them. Thoroughly water
your plants an hour before you transplant them.
Space 1- 2’ apart in rows 2’ apart. Or two to a large container.
Gently break open the sides and bottoms of their biodegradable containers and set
the Okra plants in their prepared spot only slightly deeper (about ½ inch) than
they grew in their pots. Water the Okra plants after planting don't wait for it to rain.
Wait a f few days before mulching to give the soil a chance to absorb the sun’s
warmth. Okra is appreciated for its ability to withstand drought compared to other
vegetables, but for good growth and production, you’ll need to water at least an
inch a week, just like other vegetables. Just know that if you run into an extended
dry period and can’t seem to water enough, the okra plants will be the last to suffer.
An Okra plant pod can grow from nothing to full size in 2 or 3 days. Pods first
appear at the base of the plant up so that by the end of the season you could be on
your tiptoes to harvest. Keep the pods harvested by cutting them as soon as they
reach edible size. The Okra stems are thick the pods can not just be pinched off so be
sure to bring garden clippers.
Ideal size to harvest the Okra Pods are between 2 to 4 inches long. If the pods are allowed to
stay on the plant much longer they will become very tough and stringy. If some of the Okra
pods are too big too eat always remove them as they will keep the plant from producing.
Use pruning shears to cut the Okra plant pods and cut the pods off leaving a short stub of
